Four Yellow Jacket Track & Field Athletes Compete on Day Two of Liberty (Va.) Collegiate Invite

LYNCHBURG, VA. --  Select members of the Baldwin Wallace University men's outdoor track & field team competed on day two of the Liberty University Collegiate Invitational today (Saturday, April 2) at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. The meet consisted of athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II and III.

Senior four-time NCAA Division III All-American thrower Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) placed second in the discus with a throw of 168 feet, three inches and seventh in the shot put with a mark of 48"11.75'. Yesterday, Phipps was third in the hammer throw (188"10'). He is already automatically qualified for this year's NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championship Meet in both the hammer (198"0') and discus (174"0') throws.


In the decathlon, freshman pole vault specialist Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights) placed fifth with 5,860 points and freshman Josh Price (North Olmsted) was eighth with 5,508 points.  The duo ranked first and second among Division III student-athletes in the field.  Eddy's 5,860 points were 190 points shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying total.


On the second day, Price placed third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.82 seconds (753 points) and Eddy was fifth in 16.14 seconds (717 pts.). Price placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 104"10' (503 pts.) and Eddy was 10th with a throw of 88"8' (407 pts.). Eddy tied for first in the pole vault with a top vault of 14"7.25' (746 pts.) and Price was 11th at 10"0' (369 pts.). Eddy was seventh in the javelin with a throw of 131"9' (444 pts.) and Price was eighth at 130"10' (440 pts.). In the final event of the competition, the 1500-meter run, Price was eighth in 5:12.68 (489 pts.) and Eddy was 10th in 5:30.18 (398 pts.).


On the first day, Eddy was 12th in the 100 meter dash in 12.03 seconds (645 points) and Price was 14th in 12.23 seconds (606 points). Price was 11th in the 400 meters in 54.17 seconds (633 pts.) and Eddy was 12th in 54.63 seconds (614 pts.). Eddy was third in the high jump with a leap of 6"4' (740 pts.) and Price was 11th at 5"7.75' (560 pts.), Price was seventh in the long jump at 20"10.5' (666 pts.) and Eddy was 10th at 20"6.25' (641 pts.). Eddy was seventh in the shot put at 34"0.25' (508 pts.) and Price was ninth at 33"0.25' (489 pts.).  


The rest of the BW outdoor track & field team competed at the Ohio Athletic Conference Split Meet-East at Mount Union in Alliance.

Next Saturday, April 9, the BW men travel to Delaware, Ohio to compete at the annual Ohio Wesleyan University Marv Frye Invitational Meet. Field events begin at 11:00 a.m.  The 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet takes place at Ohio Wesleyan University from May 26-28.  A year ago, it was in Berea and the year prior at OAC-member Marietta College.
