CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's outdoor track and field teams both competed on the final day (Saturday, March 19, 2011) of the two-day University of North Carolina-Charlotte 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track. The meet was not scored.
The BW men were led by senior four-time All-American Kevin Phipps (Pataskala/ Watkins Memorial), sophomore All-American Mitch Supan (Medina/Walsh Jesuit) and freshman Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights).
Phipps broke two of his own school records from last year placing third in the hammer throw with a toss of 198 feet even and third in the discus throw with a mark of 174"0'. Phipps also automatically qualified in both events for the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio from May 26-28.
Eddy placed first out of 26 competitors in the pole vault with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15"7'.
Supan placed fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 171"7', which is a high provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Meet. He also finished ninth in the hammer throw with a throw of 163"4'.
In addition, junior Josh Miller (Willard) was ninth in the high jump at 6"2'. In the shot put, sophomore Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) was eighth with a mark of 49'10.5" and junior Miles Moore (Gettysburg, Pa./Delone Catholic) was 10th at 49'2.5".
The Yellow Jacket men are back in action on Saturday, April 2 when they travel to the Ohio Athletic Conference Split Meet (East) at Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. The competition begins at 1:00 PM.
