BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's indoor track and field team won the title tonight (Friday, February 18) at the Greater Cleveland College Championships on the Harrison Dillard Track in the Lou Higgins Center. The BW men finished first with 257 points.
After five weeks of indoor competition, the BW men have won three team titles and boast a 37-1 record.
The Yellow Jacket men were led by senior four-time NCAA Division III All-American thrower Kevin Phipps (Pataskala/ Watkins Memorial) who won both the shot put with a throw of 52"9.25'and the weight throw at 60"4.5'. Senior Zachary Poole (Mentor) placed first in the high jump, with a mark of 5"7.75'. In the pole vault, freshman Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights) placed first with a height of 14'5.25"
Sophomore Ken Janosko (Mentor) led the runners by placing first in one-mile run in a time 4:32.51. In the 55-meter dash, freshman Kevin Johnson (Garfield Heights / St. Ignatius) placed first finishing in a career-best time of 6.61 seconds. Senior Jeff Bonezzi (Medina/ Senior) placed first in the 500-meter run crossing the finish line in a time of 1:10.64. In the 800-meter run junior Daniel Sloat (Medina) placed first with a time of 2:02.36. In the 4x200 meter relay, three freshmen, Shawn Cordes (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview) and Johnson, combined with junior Mike Smith (Wintersville/ Indian Creek) to place first in a time of 1:32.70.
The BW track and field teams will be back in tomorrow Saturday, February 19 when they travel to Kent State to participate in the Kent State Invitational hosted by Kent State University and the Ohio Wesleyan Pentathlon. Both meets are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
