BW Men Claim Title at Annual OWU Marv Fyre Meet

DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's outdoor track and field team claimed a team title today (Saturday, April 9, 2011) at the 14-team Ohio Wesleyan University Marv Frye Invitational Meet in Delaware, Ohio.  This is the fourth overall and second scored team meet of the outdoor season.

The BW men totalled 119.50 points to best second place OWU by 7.5 points (OWU is coached by BW graduate Kris Boey).  The Jacket men have now won four meet titles this season (indoors and outdoors) and have a combined 58-5 record.


The men were led by a 1-2-3-4 finish in the shot put and a domination of the throwing events. Junior Miles Moore (Gettysburg, Pa./ Delone Catholic) won the shot put with an NCAA Div. III provisional qualifying throw of 52" 0.5'. Senior 4-time All-American Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) was second with a season's-best and NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 51"4.25'. Sophomore Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) was third at 48"1.25'. And, while sophomore Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit) placed fourth with a toss of 47"5', he also is already provisionally nationally qualified.

In the discus, Supan won the event with a throw of 163"7' with Phipps second at 162"2', senior Matt Kromer (Parma) third at 147"10' and Marinucci was fifth.  Phipps (174"0)" and Supan (171"4') are already qualified for this year's national meet.


In the hammer, Phipps won the event with a school-record and automatic qualifying throw of 198"5' and Supan was second at 173"0'. In addition, Marinucci was eighth, Kromer 11th and Moore 17th in the 40-person field of competitors.  Phipps and Supan are qualified for the national meet in this event.


In addition to the throwers, the 4 x 100-meter relay team of freshman Shawn Cordes (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), junior Mike Smith (Wintersville/Indian Creek), junior Dan Sloat (Medina) and freshman anchorKevin Johnson (Garfield Heights/St. Ignatius) won in a season's-best time of 42.85 seconds. And, placing third were Cordes in the 200-meter dash in a season's-best time of 22.45 seconds and freshman vaulter/ decathlete Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights) in the pole vault at 14"0.5'. Eddy (15"7') is already provisionally qualified.


The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, April 16 when they travel back to Delaware and OWU to compete at the annual All-Ohio Division III Championship Meet.  The meet begins at 11:00 a.m.
