Baldwin Wallace Men Claim All-Ohio Track Title and Women Are Third

DELAWARE, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's outdoor track and field team claimed a team title today (Saturday, April 16, 2011) at the Annual All-Ohio Division III Championship Meet at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.  This is the fifth overall and third scored team meet of the outdoor season.

The Yellow Jacket men totalled 124 points to place first of 19 teams and outdistanced second place the University of Mount Union by 12 points.  The meet title was the second in three outdoor meets and improved their outdoor record to 34-1 overall. Combined with its three indoor track titles this winter, the men are now 74-5 overall.

The men were led to the title by its season-long domination by its throwers and a first place finish by freshman Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights), who won the pole vault with a vault of 15-feet and three-inches.  The throwers accounted for 75 of the team's 124 total points, including a 1-2-3-4 finish in the shot put and won all three throwing events.

Senior 4-time NCAA Division III All-American Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) led the assault by winning the shot put (52"4.75') and hammer (193"4') and placing third in the discus (147"0'). His throw in the shot put was a season's-best and improved his NCAA national meet qualifying standard. He is automatically qualified in the discus and hammer and provisionally qualified in the shot put.

Sophomore All-American Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit) won the discus (157"0'), was second in the hammer (171"11') and fourth in the shot put. He is already provisionally qualified in the shot put and discus.

In addition to Phipps and Supan, junior Miles Moore (Gettysburg, Pa./ Delone Catholic) was second in the shot put (51"1') and sophomore Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) was third in the shot (49"8.5'). Moore is provisionally qualified in the shot. Also, sophomore Jake Buckey (Geneva) placed third with a season's-best toss in the javelin (160"7').

In running events, sophomore Kenny Janosko (Mentor) placed second in the 5,000-meter run in a season's-best time of 15:27.19 and the 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Shawn Cordes (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye), junior Mike Smith (Wintersville/Indian Creek), junior Dan Sloat (Medina/ Senior) and freshmanKevin Johnson (Garfield Heights/St. Ignatius) was third with a season's-best time of 42.51 seconds

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Saturday, April 23 when they host the Annual Paul "Sparky" Adams Invitational Meet in The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
