Four-Time Division III All-American Thrower Kevin Phipps Named OAC Track Athlete of the Week

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University senior four-time Division III All-American thrower Kevin Phipps (Reynoldsburg/ Watkins Memorial) is this week's (February 7, 2011) Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his efforts in last weekend's University of Findlay Meet.

Phipps earned his award for his record-shattering performance in the 35-pound weight throw and shot put events at Findlay. In each event, he broke the previous school-record by at least one foot. In addition, in each event, Phipps qualified automatically for this spring's NCAA Division III National Indoor Championship Meet, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University.

In the weight throw, Phipps set a school-record with a throw of 62-feet and three and one-quarter inches (62"3.25'). In the shot put, Phipps broke the school record with a throw of 56"1'.  He also is the defending OAC Indoor Champion in the weight throw.  He became the first Yellow Jacket All-American in the weight throw at last season's Division III Indoor Championship Meet.

This marks the second time this winter (also on January 23) that Phipps has received the OAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week accolade in indoor track and field and it is his fourth overall. He has earned two outdoor selections.

"Kevin had just a dominating performance at Findlay," said veteran Head Coach Dr. Bill Taraschke. "He is just an outstanding thrower and team leader. Kevin excells on the track, off the track as a leader and in the classroom.  We are very proud of his efforts.  He is reaping the awards for all of his hard work and effort the past four years."

In addition to being an outstanding student-athlete in track, this fall, Phipps helped lead the Yellow Jacket football team to a strong, 7-3 overall record and earned All-OAC honors at defensive tackle while also serving as a team captain.
