BW's Supan is 4th and Phipps 7th in the Discus at NCAA Division III National Track Meet

DELAWARE, OHIO -- Baldwin Wallace University sophomore two-time All-American Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit) was fourth and senior six-time NCAA Division III All-American Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial) placed seventh in the discus today (Saturday, May 28) on the third and final day of the 2011 NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championship Meet at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware , Ohio.

Supan, who placed 17th in the shot put, had a best throw of 168-feet and three inches.  He entered the meet ranked fourth in Division III with a school-record throw of 174'8".

Phipps, who placed fourth in the hammer on Thursday (May 26) to earn his fifth All-American award and was 14th in the shot put yesterday, had a best-throw of 162'7". He entered the meet ranked fifth with a career-best throw of 174'2".

This spring, Phipps was tabbed as BW's Senior Male Outstanding Athlete recipient -- the Kenneth Steingass Award. He also graduated this spring and was a solid student and leader on campus. He graduated with a better than 3.0 grade point average, was the team captain for both football and track, was a multiple Ohio Athletic Conference champion in track and earned All-OAC accolades on the gridiron as a defensive tackle.

In addition to Phipps and Supan competing today, sophomore Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) will throw the discus later this afternoon in the women's competition that begins at 3:00 p.m.  Perrineenters the meet ranked 16th in Div. III with a career-best throw of 147'11.

Highlighting BW's efforts at this national meet has been senior distance sensation Kim Chinn (Zanesville/ West Muskingum) who won the national title last night in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for her fourth career All-American award. In addition to PhippsSupanChinn and Perrine, senior All-American pentathlete Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/ Sandy Valley) placed 12th of 22 competitors in the 7-event heptathlon.
