BW Women’s Soccer is Runner-Up at CNU Tourney

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia -- Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore Kaitlyn Clunan had a hat-trick as the Marlins defeated the Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team, 3-1, in the championship match of the Christopher (Va.) Newport University Captains Classic Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets, now 3-1 overall, defeated host CNU, 2-1 in overtime, yesterday in its first match of the tourney.
 
VWC, now 3-0-1 overall, gained a 1-0 lead at the 12:07 mark when Clunan received a ball in the middle of the box that was saved on the end line by sophomore Jasmine Dao and scored on the open net.  The goal was Clunan's second this season and the assist was the second for Dao in 2013.

The Marlins took a 2-0 lead at the 61:14 mark when Clunan made a long run up the left side of the field to beat a defender and then beat BW sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference goalie Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa.) one-on-one to score her second goal of the match and third of the season.

The Yellow Jackets stung back and closed the gap to 2-1 at the 63:16 mark when senior All-OAC forward Rachel Gokey (Chippewa Lake/Cloverleaf) scored on a header for her second goal ofv the campaign.  Gokey received a 50-50 ball from senior All-OAC forward Heather Keller (Parma), who earned her third assist of the season.

Clunan scored her final goal at 84:48 to give VWC an insurance goal and a 3-1 lead.  She took the ball at the top of the box and made her shot from 18 yards away into the right side of the goal.
 
In goal for BW, Tallmadge started and faced 12 shots, including seven on-goal, allowed three goals and made four saves. She is 2-1 in goal this season.
 
BW outshot the Marlins by an 18-12 count. The shots on-goal were tied at 7-7.  VWC had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
 
BW next plays on Sept. 14 when it travels to Grove City, Pennsylvania for a men's and women's doubleheader against Grove City College.  The women kickoff at 1:00 p.m. and the men at 3:30 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets then host Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday, Sept. 18 on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
