BW Women’s Soccer Win in Overtime

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia -- Sophomore  midfielder Katie Klespies (Chicago, Ill./University of Chicago Laboratory) scored at 93:20 of the first overtime via an assist from senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Heather Keller (Parma) as the Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team beat host Christopher Newport (Va.) University, 2-1, n the first round of the Captains Classic.  The Yellow Jackets also plays Virginia Wesleyan University tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
 
BW, now a perfect 3-0 overall, scored the only goal of the first half and took a 1-0 lead when senior All-OAC midfielder Hanna Cavalier (Chippewa Lake/Cloverleaf) took a long clearing pass from freshman defender Kelly Gough (Hudson) and outfought a Captain defender to score with a shot in the upper left of the net. The goal was the fifth of Cavalier's career and the assist by Gough was her first.

Christopher Newport tied the game at 1-1 at the 67:44 mark when senior forward Bupe Okeowo scored her second goal of the season. The goal was set up by an assist from junior midfielder Joy Piirto.  That set up Klespies game-winner in overtime.  The goal was Klepies first of the season and Keller's assist was her second.
 
In goal for BW, sophomore Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa.) started and faced 22 shots, including eight on-goal, allowed one goal and made seven saves as she improved to 2-0 overall.
 
The Captains, now 2-1 overall, outshot the Yellow Jackets by a 22-17 count, but BW led in shots on-goal, 11-8.  CNU also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Following its game tomorrow against Virginia Wesleyan, BW next plays on Sept. 14 when it travels to Grove City, Pennsylvania for a men's and women's doubleheader against Grove City College.  The women kickoff at 1:00 p.m. and the men at 3:30 p.m.
