UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's soccer team lost at Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 1-0, in an OAC match on Wasmer Field at Don Shula Stadium. The loss denied the Yellow Jackets a chance to tie the school single-season record for victories.
After a scoreless first half, the Blue Streaks (7-6 overall, 4-2 OAC), scored the game's only goal in the 57th minute when freshman midfielder Preston Mendel had a breakaway and beat Yellow Jacket sophomore All-OAC goalie Emily Tallmadge (Fairview, Pa.).
With its loss, BW fell to 13-3 overall and 4-2 in the OAC. The 13 wins are tied for third all-time. BW had 14 victories both in 1992-1993 (14-4-1 overall) and 14 in 1997-1998 (14-5-2). The 13 wins ties the 2005-2006 team which finished 13-5-3 overall.
Tallmadge faced 15 shots, allowed one goal and made three saves as she dropped her record to 11-3 this season. After 15 matches, she is allowing just 1.15 goals-per-game, has a .771 save percentage with 54 saves, four individual shutouts and six overall.
BW outshot John Carroll by a 17-15 count and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, October 26 when it at Capital University in the first match of a women's and men's OAC doubleheader at Bernlohr Stadium at 1 pm. The men's game kickoffs at 3:30 p.m.
Next week, BW ends its regular season when it hosts the University of Mount Union on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 pm and then hosts Marietta College on Seniors' & Parents' Day on Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m. Fans can watch both of those matches on Live Video via the BW web site at www.bwyellowjackets.com.
