Softball Sweeps OAC Opening Doubleheader Over Wilmington

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept  Wilmington College in its Ohio Athletic Conference opening doubleheader on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex. 

In game one, BW (10-8, 2-0 OAC) scored three runs on seven hits as it plated two runs in the second and one in the fourth.  Wilmington (10-8, 0-2 OAC) was held scoreless on two hits.

At the Plate

  • Freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) went 2-for-2 with two runs batted-in (RBIs)
  • Freshman right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored
  • Junior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark), junior Academic All-OAC third baseman Julia Gersey (Solon) and junior center fielder Lexy Coggins each had a base knock
  • Gersey had a double and an RBI

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) won her sixth game of the season as she did not allow a run on two hits with a career-high 15 strikeouts and two walks

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 12 runs on 13 hits as they plated five runs in the first, one in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth.  The Quakers scored two runs on three hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the third and fourth innings.

At the Plate

  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville Broadview Heights) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base
  • Mraz went 2-for-2 with a run scored and RBI
  • Wolford went 2-for-2 with a double, run scored and two RBIs
  • Freshman designated player Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and 2RBIs
  • Senior Academic All-OAC designated player Jackie Kasai (Columbus/Upper Arlington), sophomore first baseman Rylee Schaar (Fayetteville, N.C. / McLean {Va.}), freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw), Bricker and Coggins all had a base knock.
  • Junior Academic All-OAC infielder Grace Bowman (New Windsor, Md./Linganore) had her first career RBI on a sacrifice fly
  • Bricker had two RBIs and a walk
  • Coggins had a run scored, RBI and stolen base
  • Kasai had an RBI
  • Schaar had a run scored

In the Circle

  • Hall won back-to-back games for the first time in her career as she allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout and two walks in three innings pitched
  • Senior righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) pitched the final two innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit with five strikeouts and three walks.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, April 4 when it travels to Ada for an OAC doubleheader against Ohio Northern University on the ONU Softball Field at 3 p.m.
