Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader to Redlands (Calif.)

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team closed out its trip to The Golden State as it fell to the University of Redlands in a non-conference doubleheader at the Redlands Softball Field.

In game one, BW (1-3) was held scoreless on three hits.  Redlands (5-4) scored eight runs on nine hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the third, two in the fourth and five in the sixth. 

At the Plate

  • Senior Academic All-OAC right fielder Jackie Kasai (Columbus/Upper Arlington), junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) and freshman pinch hitter Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) each had a base hit 

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) suffered the loss as she allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with one strikeout and three walks in four innings.
  • Sophomore righty Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame) pitched the final inning and a third and allowed five runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs on six hits as they plated one run in the first and two in the fourth. The Bulldogs scored five runs on nine hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the second and four in the fifth.

At the Plate

  • Freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 2-for-3 with a run batted-in
  • Coggins, junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) and freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) all had a base knock
  • Coggins had a double and RBI.
  • Fox had her first collegiate double

In the Circle

  • Sophomore righty Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) took the loss as she allowed five runs on six hits with four strikeouts and five walks in 4.2 innings.
  • Senior right-hander Hannah Welling (Ravenna) pitched the final 1.1 innings and did not allow a run on three hits with one strikeout 

BW is back in action on Tuesday, March 7 as it continues it travels to The Aloha State and Honolulu, Hawaii for a non-conference doubleheader against NCAA Division II Hawaii Pacific University on Howard A. Okita Field at 6 p.m.
