Softball Wins Two on Opening Day of OAC Tournament, Advances to OAC Championship Series

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The third seeded Baldwin Wallace University softball team won two games on the opening day of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by the University of Mount Union on the 23rd Street Softball Field.

BW (28-14), who has now won 12 straight games, will play in the OAC Tournament Championship series on Friday, May 12 at 1 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets defeated second seeded Marietta College by a final score of 3-2 in game one and knocked off top-seeded Mount Union by a final score of 10-2 in six innings in the second game.

In game one, BW scored three runs on six hits as it plated two runs in the third and one in the sixth.  The Pioneers scored two runs on four hits as they pushed their two runs across the plate in the third.

At the Plate

  • Freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 2-for-3 with a run scored
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands), freshman right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville), freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) each had a base hit
  • Coggins had a sacrifice and walk
  • Mraz had a run batted-in (RBI) and sacrifice
  • Wolford had the game-winning RBI
  • Mau had a run scored

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) won her 13th game of the season and tallied her first collegiate postseason victory as she allowed two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 10 runs on 12 hits as they plated two runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fifth and five in the sixth.  The Purple Raiders scored two runs on 10 hits as they pushed one runs across the plate in the second and one in the fourth. 

At the Plate

  • Senior designated player Raegan Thompson (Mentor) went 3-for-4 with career-high tying two doubles and two RBIs
  • Junior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-3 with a career-high tying two doubles, run scored and career-best tying five RBIs
  • Coggins went 2-for-3 with a career-high tying three runs scored, RBI, walk and stolen base
  • Sophomore third baseman Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame), Freshman right fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw), Mau, Mraz and Ryser each had a base knock
  • Frederickson had a triple and RBI
  • Fox had two runs scored, walk and stolen base
  • Mau had a run scored and stolen base
  • Mraz had two runs scored and walk

  • Senior righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) won her 11th game of the season and tallied her first collegiate postseason victory as she allowed two runs (one earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks
