Softball Splits Doubleheader with NCAA Division II Hawaii Pacific

HONOLULU, Hawaii. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team opened its trip to The Aloha State as it split a non-conference doubleheader to NCAA Division II Hawaii Pacific University on the Howard A. Okita Field.

In game one, BW (2-4) scored two runs on eight hits as it plated one run in the fourth, one in the fifth and junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), who was placed on second due to the international tie-breaker rule, scored the game-winning run in the eighth on a throwing error by the catcher.  Hawaii Pacific (5-16) scored two runs on five hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the fifth and the tying run in the seventh. 

At the Plate

  • Freshman center fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) went 3-for-3 with a run scored
  • Freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 2-for-3with a run scored
  • Senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference designated player Jackie Kasai (Columbus/Upper Arlington), freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) and freshman third baseman Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) each had a base knock
  • Mau and Ryser and each tallied a run batted-in (RBI) 

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) picked up her second win of the season as she allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and six walks in a career-high eight innings pitched.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs on two hits as they plated both their runs in the third. The Sharks scored 12 runs on 14 hits as they pushed four runs across the plate in the first inning, two in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth

At the Plate

  • Sophomore right fielder Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Norte Dame) and Fox recorded a hit each
  • Frederickson had a double
  • Fox had an RBI
  • Mau had an RBI 

In the Circle

  • Senior righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) took the loss as she allowed six runs on five hits with three walks in 1.1 innings pitched
  • Sophomore right-hander Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) allowed six runs on nine hits with three walks in 2.2 innings pitched

BW is back in action on Friday, March 10 as it closes out its spring break trip and visit to The Aloha State with a non-conference doubleheader against NCAA Division II Chaminade University on Silversword Field at the Sand Island Park.  Game one is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with game to slated to start at 7 p.m.
