Softball Sweeps John Carroll in Regular Season Finale, Qualifies for OAC Tournament

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule as it swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against crosstown rival John Carroll University in an on Bracken Field.

BW (26-14, 12-6 OAC), who won its final 10 games of the regular season, advances to the OAC Tournament next Thursday through Saturday, May 11-13 at a site still to be determined.   

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored nine runs on a season-high 16 hits as they plated one run in the first, one in the second on the third career inside the park homerun for All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), four in the fifth, including three on the first career homerun for freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw), one in the sixth and one in the seventh. John Carroll (16-15, 4-11 OAC) scored one run on two hits as it pushed one lone run across the plate in the fifth.

At the Plate

  • Fox went 3-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored, three runs batted-in (RBIs) and stolen base
  • Junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI
  • Mau went 2-for-5 with a homerun, two runs scored and RBI
  • Sophomore third baseman Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame) went 2-for-4 with a double
  • Freshman right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and stolen base
  • Senior designated player Raegan Thompson (Mentor), junior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark), freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) and freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) each had a base hit
  • Thompson had an RBI
  • Bricker had a double and RBI
  • Ryser had a run scored
  • Wolford had a double, hit by pitch and stolen base

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) won her 12th game of the season as she allowed one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks

In game two, BW scored five runs on 11 hits as it plated one run in the first and four in the fourth off the solo homerun by Coggins and three off the first career blast by Thompson.  The Blue Streaks scored two runs on seven hits as they pushed one run across the plate in the first and one in the fourth.

At the Plate

  • Mau went 3-for-4 with a triple, run scored and stolen base
  • Coggins went 2-for-4 with a homer, run scored, two RBIs and stolen base
  • Thompson went 2-for-3 with a homerun, double, run scored and three RBIs
  • Mraz went 2-for-4 with a double
  • Bricker and Fox each had a base knock

In the Circle

  • Senior righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) earned her 10th victory as she allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
