Softball Sweeps NCAA Division II Ursuline in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – In its home opener, the Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with NCAA Division II Ursuline College on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex

In game one, BW (5-5), who is now 4-2 against NCAA Division II opponents, scored nine runs on eight hits as it plated four runs in the first and five in the third.  Ursuline (0-13) scored one runs on six hits as it pushed its lone run across the plate in the first. 

At the Plate

  • Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, career-high three runs batted-in (RBIS) and two stolen bases
  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC designated player Alicia Saxton (Boardman), junior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark, junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands), freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw), freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) and freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) all had a base knock
  • Bricker had two RBIs
  • Ryser had a double, two runs scored, RBI and walk
  • Coggins had a run scored, RBI and walk
  • Wolford had a run scored and RBI
  • Fox had a run scored, walk and stolen base
  • Saxton had a run scored

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) won her fourth game of the season as she allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on a season-high 13 hits as they plated one run in the first, one in the second and four in the fifth.  The Arrows scored one runs on two hits as they pushed their lone run across the plate in the fifth.

At the Plate

  • Bricker went 3-for-4 with an RBI
  • Mau went 2-for-4 with a stolen base
  • Sophomore right fielder Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame) went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI
  • Coggins went 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI
  • Freshman Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark), Fox, Ryser and Wolford all had a base knock
  • Fox had a double, RBI and walk
  • Wolford had a run scored and RBI
  • Ryser had a run scored

In the Circle

  • Senior righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) pitched a gem as she earned her first win of the season.  Welling allowed one unearned run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts and three walks.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, March 22 when it travels to Hiram for a non-conference doubleheader against Hiram College on Herndon Field.  Game one is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. with game two slated to begin at 5 p.m.
