Softball Falls to Hiram in Non-Conference Doubleheader

HIRAM, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team fell to Hiram College in a non-conference doubleheader on Herndon Field.

In game one, BW (5-7) scored two runs on five hits as it plated one run in the first inning on the solo homerun by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and one in the fifth.   Hiram (8-4) scored three runs on 10 hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the first, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. 

At the Plate

  • Mau went 1-for-3 with a homer, run scored and run batted-in (RBI).
  • Senior Academic All-OAC pinch hitter Jackie Kasai (Columbus/Upper Arlington) went 1-for-1 with a double and RBI.
  • Freshman right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) went 1-for-2 with a double, run scored and walk
  • Freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 1-for-3
  • Freshman designated player Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) went 1-for-3

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) suffered the loss as she allowed three runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings pitched.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on seven hits as they erupted for all six of their runs in the second inning, sparked by the two-out three-run RBI double by Smearman.  The Terries scored seven runs on nine hits as they pushed two runs across the plate in the first, one in the fourth and four in the sixth.

At the Plate

  • Mau went 2-for-3 with a run scored, RBI, walk and stolen base
  • Smearman went 1-for-3 with a double, career-high three RBIs and a walk
  • Junior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored
  • Junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) went 1-for-3 with a run scored
  • Freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI
  • Fox went 1-for-4 with a run scored

In the Circle

  • Senior righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) took the loss as she allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 5.1 innings pitched
  • Sophomore right-hander Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and did not allow a run or hit.

BW is back in action on Saturday, March 25 when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Adrian (Mich.) College on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex. Game one is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with game two slated to begin at 3 p.m.
