Softball Splits Season Opening Doubleheader with La Verne (Calif.)

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team opened the 2023 season and its spring break trip as it split a doubleheader with the University of La Verne at the Lave Verne Softball Stadium.

In game one, BW (1-1) was held scoreless on one hit.  La Verne (6-5) scored eight runs on 10 hits as it plated one run in the second, two in the fourth and five in the fifth.

At the Plate

  • Freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) recorded her first career hit in the top of the first inning.  Wolford then stole her first a career base. 

In the Circle

  • Senior right hander Hannah Welling (Ravenna) suffered the loss as she allowed eight runs on 10 hots with two strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored five runs on 11 hits as they plated three runs in the first, one in the fourth and one in the sixth.  The Leopards scored one run on six hits as they pushed their lone run across the plate in the first.

At the Plate

  • Freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 2-for-2 with a run batted-in (RBI), run scored and walk.
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) went 2-for-3 with a RBI, run scored and stolen base
  • Wolford went 2-for-3 with a RBI, run scored and stolen base
  • Freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base 
  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC designated player Alicia Saxton (Boardman), freshman right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) and freshman third baseman Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) each added a base knock. 
  • Saxton and Smearman each had an RBI

In the Circle

  • Sophomore righty Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) picked up the victory as she allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

BW is back in action on Saturday, March 4 as it continues its trip to The Golden State with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Redlands at the Redlands Softball Field at 2 p.m.
