Softball Sweeps Adrian (Mich.) in Weather-Filled Doubleheader

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader over Adrian (Mich.) College on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.

In game one that featured an hour weather delay, BW (7-7) scored two runs on seven hits as it plated one run in the fourth and fifth innings.  Adrian (7-5) was held scoreless on seven hits.

At the Plate

  • Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-3
  • Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), Freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw), freshman right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville), freshman designated player Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) and freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) all added a base knock.
  • Fox had a double and a run batted-in (RBI)
  • Mraz had her first career triple and an RBI
  • Wolford scored one of the two runs
  • Mau had a stolen base

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) picked up her fifth win of the season and her first career complete game shutout as she did not allow a run on seven hits with a career-high 13 strikeouts and just one walk.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored 12 runs on 11 hits as they plated six runs in the third and fourth innings.  The Bulldogs scored one run on five hits as they pushed their lone run across the plate in the fifth and final inning. plate 

At the Plate

  • Senior catcher Raegan Thompson (Mentor) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a career-high four RBIs
  • Junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, RBI and a stolen base
  • Mau went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base
  • Wolford went 2-for-3 with first career double, run scored and a career-high two RBIs
  • Sophomore right fielder Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame), freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) and Smearman each added a base hit
  • Frederickson had a double, run scored and RBI
  • Ryser had a run scored, two RBIs, walk and stolen base
  • Smearman had two runs scored, RBI and walk 

In the Circle

  • Senior righty Hannah Welling (Ravenna) picked up the victory as she allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

BW is back in action on Sunday, March 26 when it travels to nearby Wooster for a non-conference doubleheader against The College of Wooster at Galpin Park.  Game one is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with game two slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
