Softball Sweeps Pitt-Bradford (Pa.) in Rescheduled Doubleheader

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept a rescheduled doubleheader with the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford inside the Kessel Athletic Complex.

BW (14-10) and Pitt-Bradford (7-16) were originally scheduled to play on Saturday, March 18 but inclement weather and field conditions postponed the doubleheader until today.

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored nine runs on 13 hits as they plated one run in the first and second innings, two in the third, one in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Panthers scored one run on one hit as they pushed their lone run across the plate in sixth. 

At the Plate

  • Freshman designated player Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) went a career-best 4-for-4 with her first career-home run, career-best two runs scored, a career-high three runs batted-in (RBIs)
  • Freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) had a career-high three hits as she went 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and a career-best three RBIs
  • Junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored
  • Freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 2-for-4 with one run scored and a career-high two RBIs
  • Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and junior Academic All-OAC third baseman Julia Gersey (Solon) each added a base knock

In the Circle

  • Senior right-hander Hannah Welling (Ravenna) won her fifth game of the year as she allowed one unearned run on one hit with nine strikeouts  

In game two, BW scored seven runs on 10 hits as it plated three runs in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.  Pitt-Bradford scored five runs on six hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the second and four in the fifth.

At the Plate

  • Senior catcher Raegan Thompson (Mentor) went 3-for-4 with a career-best two doubles and three RBIs
  • Freshman center fielder Sammy Aey (Cortland/Austintown Fitch) had a career-high two hits as she went 2-for-4 with one run scored and her first career RBI
  • Freshman shortstop Sabrina Burke (London) had a career-best two hits as she went 2-for-4 with a career-high two runs scored and a career-best tying two stolen bases
  • Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC designated player Alicia Saxton (Boardman), junior second baseman Ana LaGuardia (Medina) and Smearman each had a base hit
  • Saxton had a career-high tying two runs scored, RBI and a career-best tying two walks

In the Circle

  • Sophomore righty Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) earned her first win of the season as she allowed five unearned runs on five hits with a career-high five strikeouts in a career-high five innings pitched
  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) picked up her first career save as she did not allow a run on one hit with three strikeouts and one walk in the final two innings. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 12 when they host an OAC doubleheader against the University of Mount Union on the BW Softball Field inside the Roehm Athletic Complex at 3 p.m.
