Softball Earns its Second Non-Conference Sweep of the Week, Takes Two from Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team swept its second non-conference doubleheader of the week as it took two games from Oberlin College on Culhane Field inside Dolcemaschio Stadium. 

In game one, BW (16-12) scored a season-high 16 runs on nine hits as it plated six runs in the second, one in the third, sixth in the fourth and three in the fifth.  Oberlin (7-19) scored one run on four hits as it pushed its lone run across the plate in the first.  

The 16 runs for the Yellow Jackets were the most in a game since the 2019 season when they scored 27 in their second game of the season against North Central (Minn.) University at the Tucson Invitational Games.

At the Plate

  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC second baseman Alicia Saxton (Boardman) went 2-for-3 with a double, first career triple, run scored and career-high six runs batted-in (RBIs)
  • Freshman first baseman/pitcher Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 2-for-3 with a double, first career triple, career-best three runs scored, career-high four RBIs and hit-by-pitch
  • Freshman third baseman Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-2 with a career-best tying two runs scored and two RBIs
  • Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-3 with a run scored
  • Freshman shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) went 1-for-2 with a career-high three runs scored, walk and hit-by-pitch

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) picked up her second win of the season as she allowed one run on four hits with one walk in four innings
  • Righty Ryser, who made her collegiate debut in the circle, did not allow a run or hit in one inning pitched

In game two, BW scored three runs on five hits as it plated one run in the first, one in the fourth and one in the seventh. The Yeowomen scored one runs on five hits as they pushed their lone run across the plate in the second inning.

At the Plate

  • Wolford went 2-for-3 with a career-best two triples, run scored and RBI
  • Senior Academic All-OAC right fielder Jackie Kasai (Columbus/Upper Arlington) went 1-for 3
  • Saxton went 1-for-3
  • Freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 1-for-4

In the Circle

  • Senior right-hander Hannah Welling (Ravenna) picked up her sixth win of the season in her fifth complete game of the season as she allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, April 15 when they travel to New Concord for an OAC doubleheader against Muskingum University on Donna J. Newberry Field at 1 p.m.
