Softball Splits OAC Doubleheader at Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with Marietta College on Marietta Field.

In game one, BW (12-10, 4-2 OAC) scored nine runs on 10 hits as it plated four runs in the first, one in the second, one in the fourth and three in the seventh.  Marietta (14-6, 5-1 OAC), who had its 10-game winning streak snapped, scored six runs on 10 hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth and one in the seventh. 

At the Plate

  • Junior center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermilion/Firelands) went 2-for-2 with a run scored, two runs batted-in (RBIs), walk and stolen base
  • Freshman first baseman Gillian Ryser (Hubbard) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs
  • Junior Academic All-OAC infielder Julia Gersey (Solon), junior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark), sophomore third baseman Sara Frederickson (Lake Balboa, Calif./Notre Dame), freshman left fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw), freshman right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) and freshman designated player Sam Smearman (Middleburg Heights/Berea-Midpark) all had a base knock.
  • Gersey had a double and an RBI
  • Bricker had a run scored and walk
  • Fox had two runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases
  • Mraz had a double, a career-high tying two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk
  • Smearman had a run scored

In the Circle

  • Sophomore right-hander Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) earned her eighth win of the season as she allowed five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings pitched
  • Sophomore righty Taryn Welty (Medina/Wooster) allowed one unearned run on one hit in one inning pitched

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs on four hits as they plated both their runs in the fourth inning. The Pioneers scored 10 runs on 10 hits as they pushed eight runs across the plate in the first inning and two in the fourth.

At the Plate

  • Fox, Mraz, Ryser and Smearman accounted for a hit each
  • Mraz and freshman outfielder Sammy Aey (Cortland/Austintown Fitch) each scored a run

In the Circle

  • Senior right-hander Hannah Welling (Ravenna) took the loss as she allowed eight runs on five hits with three walks in two-thirds of an inning
  • Welty allowed two runs on five hits with a strikeout in the final 3.1 innings pitched

BW is back in action on Friday, April as it remains on the road when it travels to Bradford, Pennsylvania for a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford inside the Kessel Athletic Complex at 2 p.m.
