BW Football Beats Capital for Third Straight Win

BEREA, Ohio – Junior running back Nolan Sordyl (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) ran for a career-high 193 yards in 23 attempts and scored one touchdown as the Baldwin Wallace University football team defeated visiting Capital University, 28-12, on Professor Appreciation Day an Ohio Athletic Conference game on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium Stadium before 1,455 fans on a cold and blustery day.

The Yellow Jackets led 7-6 after one quarter, 14-12 at halftime and 21-12 after three periods. BW outgained Capital, 383-312, including 328-216 on the ground.
 
With its win, BW is 5-2 overall, 4-2 in the OAC, has won three straight games and now owns a 34-11 all-time series advantage against the Crusaders, including two straight wins. With its loss, Capital drops to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the OAC and has lost five straight.
 
Also for BW, junior quarterbacks Michael Slack (Casselberry, Fla./Pine Castle Christian Academy) and Kyle Ohradzansky (Avon/ Canton McKinley) split the duties for the sixth straight game. Slack completed  2-of-4 for 30 yards with one TD and two interceptions. Ohradzansky completed 3-of-6 passes for 25 yards with a TD. He also ran for 21 yards in three attempts. In addition to Sordyl on the ground, senior two-time All-OAC multi-purpose player Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview) ran for 85 yards in 11 attempts and caught one pass for a 19 yards for a  TD and sophomore RB Isaac Reed III (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh) ran for 50 yards in eight attempts. The top receiver was senior track All-American and wide receiver Kevin Johnson (Maple Heights/St. Ignatius) with two receptions for 17 yards and a TD. He also recovered a fumble for a TD too. The defense was led by junior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-America candidate and safety Joe Kasper (Mentor) with a career-high 12 tackles.
 
Offensively for the Crusaders were led by senior RB Alex Coleman who ran for 52 yards in eight.  Freshman QB Chase Longwell completed 7-of-15 passes for 96 yards with one interception. The top receiver was senior WR Jacob Batcho with three catches for 35 yards . The defense was led by freshman defensive back Dallas Banks with 11 tackles.
 
The Yellow Jackets opened scoring at the 10:21 mark in the first quarter when Holt ran 18 yards to the Crusader one yard line where he fumbled the ball. It rolled into the endzone and Johnson recovered for the TD. Senior All-OAC placekicker Chris Mohler (Kent/Roosevelt) added the point-after-touchdown (PAT) kick for a 7-0 lead. The score capped a four plays and 91 yards in 1:18 and was highlighted by a 57-yard run by Sordyl on the first play from scrimmage.
 
Capital came right back and drove 75 yards in 11 plays to make it 7-6 with 5:09 left in the first stanza when Beakey ran nine yards to the endzone for his first TD this season, but the PAT was blocked to keep it a one-point game.
 
BW took a 14-6 lead at 12:31 of the second stanza when Slack threw 19 yards to Holt and Mohler added his second PAT boot of the game. It was on the second play following a botched snap on a punting attempt. Holt's TD also was his team-leading sixth this season.
 
Capital cut the deficit to 14-6 with 5:35 left before halftime when freshman RB Brent Walton ran two yards for a TD but the Crusaders missed their PAT kick. The Walton score capped an 8-play and 58-yard drive in 4:30.
 
The lead became nine points when Ohradzansky threw six yards to a wide open Johnson in the left corner of the endzone at the 10:30 mark, and Mohler added his third PAT for a 21-12 lead. The scoring toss, Johnson's third via the air and fourth overall, culminated a 9-play and 64-yard drive in 4:20.
 
BW added to its lead and made the score 28-12 at 12:21 of the final period when Sordly bulled into the endzone from a yard away for his fifth TD this season and Mohler added the PAT. The TD run capped a 12-play and 77-yard drive in 5:40.
