On Saturday, Sept. 17, Delapenha was honored in Finnie Stadium before the Yellow Jackets football game. His wife Lorraine and two of their three children were on hand. Also on the field were his former BW football teammates.

Nicknamed the "Crusher"

A leader on campus who was active as a football player and as president of his fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha, Delapenha was known for his quick wit, great smile and kindness. Nicknamed "Crusher" by his teammates and fraternity brothers, Delapenha was an offensive lineman on the team.

"Donny had a great personality," said the late and former head coach Bob Packard in 2001 when he received word of his death. "He was a real team player. The type of young man who made everyone around him better because he worked so hard in practice."

Following graduation, Delapenha moved to New York City. He moved up the career ladder and became vice president and head bond trader for the banking and financial services firm of Keefe, Bruyette & Woods. The firm's offices were in the World Trade Center Tower 2. At the time of the attack, he was 37 years old.

Remembered by the BW Community

This year a memorial scholarship was created in his honor. Thirty-seven BW alumni, Lambda Chi Alphafraternity brothers, football teammates and friends contributed to it. The first award was made this fall to a varsity athlete who plays defensive end.

"I refuse to allow these events [of 9/11] to affect the way I remember Donny...that's how he would have wanted it," said his friend Ken Gabriel '85. "I choose to remember Donny by the smile he always wore on his face and as the gentleman he truly was."
