BW Ends Season With Loss To Heidelberg

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University football team ended the season by falling to Heidelberg University, 42-14, today in an OAC game on Seniors' and Parents' Day on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.
Heidelberg University junior running back Cartel Brooks set an NCAA all divisions record when he ran for 465 yards in 38 attempts and scored three touchdowns as the No.18-ranked Student Princes defeated Baldwin Wallace University
 
Brooks broke the previous NCAA record of 455 yards set earlier this season on October 26 by Octavias McKoy of Western Connecticut versus Worchester State.  Brooks' 465 yards gives him a school-record 1,704 this season. His 465 yards also bettered the Student Prince single-game record of 337 which he set against Otterbein University on Oct. 12.
 
The score was tied 7-7 after one quarter, Heidelberg led 21-7 at halftime and 35-7 after three periods. With Brooks leading the way, the Student Princes outgained the Yellow Jackets, 673-446, including a 505-272 advantage on the ground.
 
With its win, Heidelberg ends its regular season 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the OAC and now must await the NCAA Division III Playoff Selection Committee's decision on At-Large berths. The win also cut BW's all-time series lead to 36-21. BW has played Heidelberg more than any other opponent in its history.
 
BW ends its season at 6-4 overall and 5-4 in the OAC and had its 44th winning season (plus one .500 season) in the last 48 years.
 
Offensively for BW, sophomore quarterback Tyler Moeglin (Canton/ Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas), in his first career start, completed 18-of-32 passes for 174 yards and two TD's. He also ran for 74 yards in 17 attempts. In addition, senior two-time All-OAC flanker Josiah Holt (Elyria/Grafton Midview) ran for 99 yards in 13 attempts and caught seven passes for 66 yards and a TD. The 165 all-purpose yards gives Holt a career-ending 3,306.  The defense was led by senior Academic All-OAC linebacker David Flegal (Akron/ Richfield Revere) with 16 tackles. The two-time OAC Defensive Player of the Week, ends the season with a team-leading 105 stops, including eight games with 10 or more.
 
In addition to setting a Heidelberg single-game mark for rushing yards, Brooks broke his own single-season mark. Also for the Heidelberg offense, junior QB Michael Mees completed 15-of-21 passes for 168 yards and three TD's. The top receivers were sophomore Ethan Kindle and Josh Lynch each with three catches, including a TD. The defense was led by senior LB Adam Cepik and senior defensive back Mitch Kelly each with 10 tackles.
 
The Yellow Jackets opened scoring at the 10:07 mark of the first quarter and gained a 7-0 lead when Moeglin threw a screen pass to Holt who rambled 19 yards to the endzone and senior All-OAC placekicker Chris Mohler (Kent/ Roosevelt) booted the point-after-touchdown (PAT) kick.  The catch and run capped a 7-play and 94-yard drive in 2:28.
 
Heidelberg tied the score at 7-7 when Brooks raced 81 yards on the first play of its third possession with 50 seconds left in the first quarter, and senior PK Dan Kilger added the PAT kick.
 
The Student Princes grabbed a 14-7 lead at the 5:02 mark of the second quarter when Mees passed two yards to sophomore tight end Zach Hogya and Kilger booted the PAT. The scoring toss capped a 9-play and 60-yard drive.
 
Heidelberg grabbed a 21-7 lead 34 seconds before halftime when Mees threw 19 yards to senior WR Josh Lynch and Kilger added the PAT to cap a 9-play and 85-yard drive.
 
The Student Princes increased their lead to 28-7 with 9:25 left in the third period when Mees threw a 4-yard TD pass to sophomore WR Ethan Kindle and Kilger booted the PAT. The drive capped a 8-play and 98-yard drive.
 
Brooks gave the Student Princes a 35-7 lead with 2:46 to go in the third when he sped 41 yards to the endzone and Kilger booted the PAT. The scoring jaunt capped a 5-play and 70-yard drive in 1:19.
 
Brooks made NCAA history with a 13-yard TD run with 4:26 left to give Heidelberg a 42-7 advantage. Kilger booted the PAT.
 
BW scored its final points on an 18-yard pass from Moeglin to senior WR and track All-American Kevin Johnson (Maple Heights/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) with three seconds remaining. Mohler added the final PAT of his career.
