BW loses to JCU, 27-7, in Battle for Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy

BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace Univeristy football team was defeated by John Carroll Universoty University, 27-7, in the annual Lee Tressel Shrine Classic and 25th Annual Battle for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy  in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for each team on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium.  

The game was tied at 0-0 after one quarter; the Blue Streaks led 17-0 at halftime and 20-7 after three stanzas. John Carroll outgained the Yellow Jackets, 368-183, including 258 yards through the air.

With its win, JCU  is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC. BW, now 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the OAC, plays Muskingum University next Saturday, September 28. JCU's win closes BW's series advantage to 25-24-4 and 13-12 in Gold Bowl Trophy games.

JCU was led on offense by junior quarterback Mark Myers who completed 19-of-33 for 258 yards with one TD and one interception. His top target was junior wide Receiver Aramis Greenwood with seven catches for 80 yards. Senior RB DuQuan Grobsmith led all ball carriers with 115 yards in 29 attempts and one TD. JCU's top tackler was senior linebacker Mitch Krotz with a game-high 15 tackles, including 3.5 for loss and one QB sack.

Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore RB Issac Reed III (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh) had 37 yards in 12 attempts. Through the air, a pair of QB's completed just 5-of-13 passes for 49 yards with one TD and three interceptions.  The BW defense was led by junior cornerback Nelson Candelario (Cape Coral, Fla./Island Coast) with 12 tackles, including one for loss.

The Blue Streaks opened scoring at the 11:49 mark in the second quarter as Myers hit senior wide receiver Alex Kline for a 12-yard touchdown pass and sophomore placekicker Kresimir Ivkovic converted the PAT to make the score 7-0. Kline's TD catch capped a 12-play and 96-yard drive in 5:41.

John Carroll added to its lead with 18 seconds left in the first half as senior running back Randy Greenwood took the wildcat snap and ran in for a two-yard TD run and Ivkovic converted the PAT to make the score 14-0. Greenwood's TD run completed a 9-play and 69-yard drive in 4:54.

After a BW fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Ivkovic added a 45-yard field goal as time expired to give the Blue Streak a 17-0 lead at intermission.

JCU opened second half scoring as Ivkovic added a 28-yard field goal at the 13:13 mark to make the score 20-0. The field goal capped off a nine-play and 13-yard drive in 0:44.

BW got on the board at the at the 8:46 mark of the third quarter as junior QB Kyle Ohradzansky (Avon/Canton McKinley) hit junior wide receiver Kyle Dunne (Rocky River) for a nine-yard TD pass. Senior placekicker Chris Mohler (Kent/Roosevelt) made the PAT to make the score 20-7. Dunne's TD capped a 14-play and 75-yard drive in 4:27.

The Blue Streaks opened the fourth quarter when Grobsmith rushed 6 yards to the endzone and Ivkovic added the PAT kick to make the score 27-7. Grobsmith's TD completed a 12-play and 89-yard drive in 4:50.
