No. 20 Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against No. 13 Trine (Ind.)

ANGOLA, Ind. -- In an early season non-conference game between ranked team, the No. 20 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team fell to No. 13 nationally ranked Trine (Ind.) University by a final score of 62-60 inside the MTI Center.

BW (2-1) had two players score in double figures led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) as she scored a game-high tying and a season-high 16 points while grabbing six rebounds.  Senior Academic All-OAC guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) contributed 11 points.  Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon), who is this week's OAC Player of the Week, chipped in nine points and grabbed a game-high and season-best 10 rebounds.

Trine (1-0) had two players score in double figures led by junior guard Sidney Wagner and sophomore guard/forward Erin Sherwood each scored a game-high tying 16 points while each grabbing a team-high tying six rebounds. 

First Quarter (Trine, 16-12)

  • The Thunder shot 50 percent from the field
  • Trine hit the quarters only three pointer
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 66.7 percent from the foul line 

Second Quarter (Trine, 29-26)

  • BW tied the game up at 24-24 on a layup by Wochele at the 2:56 mark
  • The Thunder closed the quarter out on a 5-2 run
  • Trine shot from 42.9 the field while the Yellow Jackets shot 41.7
  • BW shot 42.9 percent from three-point land
  • The Yellow Jackets hit the quarters only free throw

Third Quarter (BW, 43-41)

  • BW took its first lead of the game at 30-29 on a layup by Vaillant at 8:13
  • The Thunder regained the lead at 35-34 at the 4:33 mark
  • The game would be tied two more times with the last coming at 40-40 at 1:21
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 61.5 percent from the field to just 26.7 for Trine
  • The Thunder shot 57.1 percent from the foul line

Fourth Quarter (Trine, 62-60)

  • Trine tied the game at 46-46 at the 8:00 mark
  • The game was tied once more at 47-47 when Vaillant hit a pair of free throws at 7:40
  • BW cut the lead down to two points on five occasions with the last coming at 62-60 on a three-pointer by Wochele with 50 seconds remaining
  • The Yellow Jackets outshot the Thunder 38.5 to 37.5 from the field
  • BW knocked down five three pointers to none for Trine
  • The Thunder led at the foul line by a 75 percent to 55.6 margin

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, November 21 when they play their first home contest in the first game of women's and men's doubleheader against La Roche (Pa.) University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 5 p.m.
