Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 4 Rhode Island College in Final Game of Cruzin Classic

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team was defeated by No. 4 nationally ranked Rhode Island College in its final game of the Cruzin Classic by a final score of 65-52 inside the Fernandez Family Center on the campus of NAIA St. Thomas University.

BW (8-3) had three players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) as she scored a career-high tying 11 points and grabbed a team-best tying and career-high tying four rebounds.  Senior guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) and junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) each poured in 10 points.  Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) chipped in eight points and a team-best tying four rebounds. Junior forward Sadie Arend (Carey) contributed a career-high five points.

Rhode Island College (12-0) had two players score in double digits led by senior forward Izabelle Booth as she scored a game-high 15 points. Junior forward Angelina Nardolillo added 11 points.  Senior guard Sophia Guerrier grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds.

1st Quarter (RIC, 16-8)

  • The Yellow Jackets took an early 4-2 lead when junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) knocked down a pair from the charity stripe at the 7:35 mark
  • The Anchormen responded with a 5-0 run to take 7-4 lead at 5:17
  • Rhode Island College outshot BW 43.8 to 15.4 percent from the field
  • The Yellow Jackets hit the only four free throws of the quarter

2nd Quarter (RIC, 42-13)

  • The Anchormen held BW scoreless for the first 8:18 minutes of the period as they extended their lead to 37-10 at the 1:41 mark
  • BW got its points from Vaillant and Riley with the last coming on a three point by Riley as time expired
  • Rhode Island College shot 60.0 percent from the field, 75 percent from three point land and 71 from the foul line 

3rd Quarter (RIC, 56-32)

  • The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 48-25 on a three-pointer by Wochele at the 4:26 mark
  • The Anchormen outscored BW 8-7 down the stretch
  • Rhode Island College outshot the Yellow Jackets 66.7 to 37.5 percent from the field
  • BW was a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line and hit the quarter's only three three-pointers

4th Quarter (RIC, 65-52)

  • The Yellow Jackets opened the final stanza on an 8-2 run to cut the lead down to 58-38 on a layup by Ressler at 6:38
  • The Anchormen pushed their lead to 63-41 at the 5:09 mark
  • BW closed the game on an 11-2 run

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 3 when they host an OAC game against the University of Mount Union in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7 p.m.
