Women’s Basketball Wins OAC Regular Season Title, Defeats Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball claimed its 11th Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season title as it defeated Heidelberg University by a final score of 82-50 in the Seiberling Gymnasium. 

BW (20-4, 16-1 OAC), who won its seventh outright OAC Championship, had two players score in double figures led by junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) with a game-high 12 points. Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) added 10 points.

Heidelberg (4-20, 1-16 OAC) was led by junior forward Ashley Ballard as she scored 10 points 

1st Quarter (BW, 28-15)

  • The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-2 lead on layup by at the 7:33 mark
  • The Student Princes used a 4-2 run to cut the lead down to 12-6 on a layup by junior Academic All-OAC guard Emma Keto at 6:08
  • BW responded with a 14-6 run to take a 26-12 lead on a layup by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) with 56 remaining
  • Heidelberg outscored the Yellow Jackets 3-2 over the final seconds

2nd Quarter (BW, 47-23)

  • BW opened the second stanza on an 11-2 run to take a 39-17 lead on a layup by Vaillant at the 4:30 mark.
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored the Student Princes 8-6 down the stretch

3rd Quarter (BW, 64-38)

  • Heidelberg opened the second half on a 10-3 run to cut the lead down to 52-30 on a layup by junior guard Chloe Gilbert at the 7:27 mark
  • The Student Princes kept battling back as they cut the lead down to 54-36 when freshman center Mya Jones split a pair of free throws at 4:23
  • BW answered with a 7-0 run to take a 61-36 when Ressler knocked down a pair from the charity stripe at the 2:30 mark
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored Heidelberg 3-2 the remainder of the third period 

4th Quarter (BW, 82-50)

  • Each team scored three points apiece through the first four minutes of the final quarter
  • The Student Princes cut the lead down to 77-50 on a layup by Jones at the 1:44 mark
  • BW closed the game on a 5-0 run to make the final score of 82-50 on a layup by freshman guard Rylee Bennett (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) with 12 seconds left 

The Yellow Jackets close out the regular season portion of their schedule on Saturday, February 17 when they host an OAC and Seniors' Day game against Marietta College in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 4 p.m.
