Women’s Basketball Defeats Crosstown Rival John Carroll in Tightly Contested OAC Clash

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated crosstown rival John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 64-55 on Mike Moran Court inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

BW (5-2, 2-0 OAC) had two players score in double figures led by junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) as she recorded her third straight and sixth career double-double with a game-high 18 points and game-best 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) contributed a career-high 14 points.

John Carroll (4-4, 0-2 OAC) had two players score in double digits as junior guard Maddie Pietrowski and freshman guard Brooke Laub each scored 10 points

1st Quarter (Tied, 16-16)

  • The quarter was tied on two occasions with the last with 55 seconds remaining
  • The quarter featured five lead changes with the Yellow Jackets holding the largest lead of five points at 10-5 on a pair of free throws by senior guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) at the 5:48 mark
  • BW outshout the Blue Streaks 43.8 percent to 40.0 percent from the field
  • The Yellow Jackets won the rebound battle by a margin of 9-7 

2nd Quarter (Tied, 26-26)

  • The quarter was tied on five occasions with the last coming with five seconds left on the layup by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon)
  • BW outshot John Carroll from the field by a 36.4 to 33.3 percent margin
  • The Yellow Jackets won the rebound battle by a margin of 9-5

3rd Quarter (BW, 40-37)

  • After the game was tied at 28, BW went on an 8-2 run to take a 36-30 lead on a layup by senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) at 5:21
  • The Blue Streaks responded with a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 36-35 at the 4:15 mark
  • The Yellow Jackets closed out the quarter on an 10-2 run with their final points coming on a layup by Miller as time expired
  • BW outshot John Carroll from the field by a 53.3 to 27.8 percent margin
  • The Yellow Jackets once again won the battle of the board 9-6

4th Quarter (BW, 64-55)

  • The Blue Streaks opened the final stanza on a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 46-41 at 9:03
  • BW answered with a 4-0 run of its own to push the lead back to 50-41 on a layup by Vaillant at the 7:09 mark
  • John Carroll responded with a 5-0 run to cut the score down to 50-46 at 6:19
  • The Yellow Jackets regained the lead that they would never surrender at 56-51 on a jumper by Valliant at the 2:29 mark
  • BW scored five of its final eight points from the charity stripe with the last coming on a pair by Miller with six seconds remaining

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Sunday, December 10 when they host an OAC game against Capital University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 2 p.m.
