No. 23 Women’s Basketball Drops First OAC Game, Falls to Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – The No. 23 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team lost its first Ohio Athletic Conference game as it was defeated by Capital University by a final score of 71-64 in Performance Arena inside the Capital Center

BW (15-4, 11-1 OAC), who snapped its seven game winning streak, had three players score in double figures led b junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) as recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) and junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) each contributed 11 points.

Capital (14-5, 9-3 OAC), who ended a 16 game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets dating back to January of 2016, had four players score in double digits led by junior guard Bri O'Connor and sophomore forward Samaree Perkins as the duo each scored a game-high 18 points. Junior All-OAC guard Laney Murphy chipped in 17 points.  Senior guard Demi Brewer added 10.

1st Quarter (CAP, 22-13)

  • Capital took an early 9-5 lead when Perkins converted the traditional three-point play at the 7:23 mark
  • BW cut the lead down to 13-11 on layup by Vaillant at 3:45
  • The Comets outscored the Yellow Jackets 9-2 the remainder of the quarter

2nd Quarter (CAP, 37-31)

  • BW opened the second stanza on a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 22-18 on a layup by sophomore guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) at the 8:17 mark
  • Capital extended its lead to 30-21 on layup by Brewer at 5:54
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored the Comets 10-7 down the stretch

3rd Quarter (CAP, 52-48)

  • BW opened the second half on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 41-40 on Ressler three-pointer at the 6:04 mark
  • Capital responded with a 5-0 run to push its lead to 46-40 on a triple by freshman guard Kendall Spreen at 4:08

4th Quarter (CAP, 71-64)

  • The Comets pushed its lead to 56-49 on when Perkins knocked down a pair from the charity stripe at the 8:31 mark
  • The Yellow Jackets answered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 56-53 when Irwin buried a three at 6:44
  • Capital outscored BW 15-11 the remainder of the game

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, January 31 when they host an OAC and Play4Kay game against crosstown rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7 p.m.
