No. 18 Women’s Basketball Takes Down La Roche (Pa.) in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – Playing in its first home game of the season, the No. 18 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated La Roche (Pa.) University in a non-conference game by a final score of 80-56 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (3-1) had five players score in double figures led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) as she scored 17 points.  Senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) comtributed a season-high 14 points.  Junior All-AC and Academic All-OAC guard forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) chipped in 10 points and added seven assists and five rebounds.  Junior guard Alek Johnson (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) and sophomore guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) each added 10 points.

La Roche (2-3) was led by Machia Hairston who had a game-high 18 points

1st Quarter (BW 24-13)

  • Vaillant got the Yellow Jackets started scoring six points
  • BW shot 58% from the field including 2-7 from three
  • The Yellow Jacket defense forced four turnovers

2nd Quarter (BW 43-26)

  • Ressler reached double figures with her second three pointer of the night
  • The Yellow Jackets scored 12 points off the bench led Philpot
  • The Redhawks had four steals
  • BW did not allow a single La Roche three pointer in the first half

3rd Quarter (BW 62-46)

  • Miller scored six of her 10 points on the night in the third quarter
  • La Roche outscored BW 20-19 thanks to Allen, Hairston, and Robison scoring six points each

4th Quarter (BW 80-56)

  • BW took its biggest lead of the game of 27 points with 0:47 to play
  • Freshman forward Eily Badertscher (Wooster) and freshman forward Rylee Bennett (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) each recorded their first collegiate basket

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, November 29 when it travels to nearby Oberlin for a non-conference game against Oberlin College in the Phillips Gymnasium inside the Philips Physical Education Center at 7 p.m. 

BW opens OAC action on Saturday, December 2 when it travels to New Concord to take on Muskingum University on Performance Court inside the Anne C. Steele Center at 2 p.m. The next home game is on Sunday, December 10 when the Yellow Jackets host an OAC game against Capital University at 2 p.m
