Women’s Basketball Stays Unbeaten in OAC, Holds Off Marietta in Highly Contested Game

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team held off Marietta College in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 59-53 inside the Ban Johnson Arena.

BW (10-3, 6-0) had two players score in double figures led by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) as she scored a game-high tying 13 points.  Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.   Senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) grabbed a career-high and game-best tying 11 rebounds.

Marietta (9-4, 4-2) was led by senior Academic All-American forward Kelly Levering as she scored a game-high tying 13 points.  Senior Academic All-OAC forward Makenzie Wilson grabbed a game-best tying 11 rebounds.

1st Quarter (BW, 17-12)

  • The Pioneers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on a Levering layup at 8:59
  • The Yellow Jackets responded with a 13-3 run to take the lead on a triple by senior guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) at the 4:59 mark
  • Marietta answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 13-12 on a jumper by sophomore guard Sophia Murray at 3:12
  • BW closed the stanza on a 4-0 run to take a 17-12 lead on a junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) layup as time expired

2nd Quarter (Tied, 27-27)

  • The Pioneers opened the period on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 17-17 when junior guard Paige Tolson converted the traditional three-point play at 8:01
  • The Yellow Jackets came back with a 5-2 run to take a 22-19 lead on a layup by junior guard Alek Johnson (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) at the 5:09 mark
  • Marietta fought back with an 8-0 run to take a lead 27-22 lead on a senior forward Hannah Kroft layup at 1:50
  • BW closed out the first half on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 27-27 at the intermission with the last points coming on a three-pointer by Ressler with 33 seconds remaining 

3rd Quarter (BW, 42-39)

  • The Yellow Jackets continued its scoring streak out of the break as it used a 7-2 run to take a 34-29 lead on a Vaillant layup at 7:19
  • The Pioneers answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 34-34 when Murray split a pair of free throws at the 3:02 mark
  • BW outscored Marietta 8-5 down the stretch 

4th Quarter (BW, 59-53)

  • The two teams accounted for three points in the first 3:15 of the final stanza
  • Over the next three minutes, each team scored eight points to put the score at 50-48 with 3:43 remaining
  • The Pioneers tied the game at 50-50 on a pair of free throws from Murray at 3:03
  • The Yellow Jackets closed the game on a 9-3 run getting its final points when Ressler split a pair from the charity stripe with three seconds remaining.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, January 10 when it hosts an OAC game against Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center at 7 p.m.
