Women’s Basketball Streaks Past Comets

BEREA, Ohio – In just its second home game of the season, the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 68-53 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (6-2, 3-0 OAC) was led by junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) as she recorded her fourth straight and seventh career double-double with a game-high and season-high 22 points and a game-best 18 rebounds

Capital (4-4, 1-2 OAC) had two players score in double digits led by junior guard Bri O'Connor as she scored 18 points. Junior All-OAC guard Lainey Murphy contributed 15 points.

1st Quarter (Cap, 13-11)

  • The Comets jumped out to a 9-4 lead on a jumper by O'Conner at the 5:54 mark
  • The Yellow Jackets cut the lead down to 9-7 on a triple by senior guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) at 4:44
  • After a Capital layup by Perkins at the 3:25 mark to make the score 13-7, BW scored the final four points of the quarter with the last coming on Vaillant layup with 55 seconds remaining 

2nd Quarter (BW, 34-20)

  • Both teams were held scoreless for the first 2:25 of the second quarter
  • The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the game at 18-16 on a three-pointer by junior guard Alex Johnson (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) at the 6:01 mark
  • BW outscored the Comets 16-4 over the remainder of the quarter with the last points coming on a layup by sophomore guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) with six seconds remaining 

3rd Quarter (BW, 45-37)

  • The Yellow Jackets held Capital scoreless until the 6:08 mark as BW led 39-22
  • The Yellow Jackets had their largest lead of the game of 20 points at 44-24 when Vaillant hit a pair from the charity stripe at 4:00
  • The Comets outscored BW 13-1 over the remainder of the quarter
  • Capital shot 42.9 percent from three point land as it hit three of its nine three pointers in the game

4th Quarter (BW, 68-53)

  • The Yellow Jackets extended its lead to 59-46 on a triple from sophomore guard Kacie Badylak (Cincinnati /Archbishop McNicholas) at the 5:39 mark.
  • The Comets cut the lead down to 63-51 on three-pointer by sophomore guard Jenna Horsley with 4:03 remaining
  • BW outscored Capital 5-2 down the stretch with the last points coming on a pair of free throws by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) with 46 seconds remaining

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 16 when they travel to Westerville for an OAC game against Otterbein University in the Rike Center at 1 p.m.
