No. 23 Women’s Basketball Defeats Mount Union, Wins Seventh Straight

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 23 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated the University of Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 70-49 in the Timken Gymnasium inside the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.

BW (15-3, 11-0 OAC), swept the season series and improved to 61-43 in the all-times series and has won the last 14 meetings against Mount Union (7-11, 4-7 OAC).  

The Yellow Jackets, who have won seven straight games and 13 of its last 14 games, had xx players score in double figures led by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) as she scored a game-high 15 points.  Junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) chipped in 10 points.

The Purple Raiders was led by sophomore forward Mckayla Dunkle with 14 points.

1st Quarter (Tied, 13-13)

  • Mount Union opened the game on a 5-0 run on a three-pointer by Ali Hudik at the 8:56 mark.
  • BW cut the lead down to 5-4 when sophomore forward Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) converted the four-point play at 8:12
  • Each team scored nine points over the next five minutes making the score 13-9 on a three-point by play by Dunkle at the 3:25 mark.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored the final four point of the quarter on free throws from senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and senior guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) with the last two coming from Wochele with eight seconds left

2nd Quarter (BW, 29-24)

  • BW opened the second stanza on a 12-3 run to take a 23-16 lead when junior guard Alek Johnson (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) split a pair of free throws at the 3:25 mark.
  • The Purple Raiders responded with an 8-3 run to cut the lead down to 26-24 on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Audrey Livesay at 1:18
  • The Yellow Jackets scored the final three-pointers of the half when Irwin buried a shot from beyond the arc with 57 seconds remaining

3rd Quarter (BW, 48-36)

  • BW pushed the lead to 36-30 on a pair of free throws sophomore guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNicholas) at the 6:22 mark
  • The Yellow Jackets closed out the quarter on a 12-8 capped off by a hook shot by Vaillant with 13 seconds left

4th Quarter (BW, 70-49)

  • BW opened the final quarter on a 6-3 run to take a 54-39 advantage on layup by Vaillant at the 6:33 mark
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored Mount Union 16-10 down the stretch

BW is back in action on Saturday, January 27 when it travels to Bexley for an OAC game against Capital University in Performance Arena inside the Capital Center at 2 p.m.
