No. 25 Women’s Basketball Defeats Ohio Northern in Battle of OAC Unbeatens

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 25 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Northern University in a battle of Ohio Athletic Conference unbeatens by a final score of 67-58 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (11-3, 7-0 OAC) had four players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Alyssa Miller (New Philadelphia) as she scored a career-high and game-high best tying 16 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNichols) chipped in a season-best 11 points.  Senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) each contributed 10 points.

Ohio Northern (8-5, 6-1 OAC) had two players score in double digits led by senior All-American guard Bryn Serbin as she scored a game-high tying 16 points.  Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Brooke Allen added 13 points. 

1st Quarter (BW, 16-10)

  • The Yellow Jackets took an early 13-4 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Alex Johnson (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) at the 4:22 mark
  • BW pushed the lead to 16-6 on triple from Badylak at 1:09
  • The Polar Bears scored the final four points of the quarter with the last coming on a jumper by Serbin with 54 seconds remaining

2nd Quarter (BW, 37-27)

  • Ohio Northern kept the scoring streak going as it used a 5-0 run to cut the lead down to 16-15 on a trey from Serbin at the 9:10 mark
  • The Yellow Jackets responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead to 22-16 on a back-to-back three-pointers by Badylak and Philpot with the last coming at 8:18
  • The Polar Bears answered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 22-20 on jumper by sophomore guard Noelle Ruane at the 6:32 mark
  • BW came right back with an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 28-20 on three-pointer by Miller at 4:10
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored Ohio Northern 9-7 down the stretch as Miller scored the final two points as time expired

3rd Quarter (BW, 56-49)

  • Ohio Northern opened the quarter on a 11-5 run to cut the lead down to 42-38 on a four-point play by junior guard Abby Dickson at the 6:22 mark
  • BW answered with a 5-0 run to push the lead to 47-38 on a traditional three-point play by Philpot at 5:45.
  • The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 56-44 on a Vaillant jumper at the 1:28 mark
  • The Polar Bears scored the final five points of the quarter with the last coming on a layup by Serbin with 45 seconds left 

4th Quarter (BW, 67-58)

  • The Yellow Jackets held a 61-49 lead through the first three minutes of the final stanza
  • Ohio Northern responded with a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 61-55 on a layup by junior forward Brooke Allen at 3:56
  • BW went on a 6-0 run to take a 67-55 lead when junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with 38 seconds left
  • The Polar Bears scored the final points on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Mackenzie Suprano with 27 seconds left 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, January 13 when they travel to Wilmington for an OAC game against Wilmington College on Hermann Court inside the Fred Raizk Arena at 2 p.m.
