No. 24 Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Heidelberg on Professor Appreciation Night

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 24 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Heidelberg University in an Ohio Athletic Conference and Professor Appreciation game by a final score of 89-49 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (13-3, 9-0 OAC), who scored a season-high in points and has won 10 of its last 11 games, had two players score in double figures led by sophomore guard Kaycie Badylak (Cincinnati/Archbishop McNicholas) as she scored a game-high 12 points. Senior guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) chipped in 11 points.

Heidelberg, (3-13, 0-9 OAC), who has now dropped the last 11 games to the Yellow Jackets was led by sophomore guard Amari Slaughter as she scored 11 points.

1st Quarter (BW, 20-9)

  • After a bucket by the Student Princes to open the game, BW went on a 17-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow Munroe Falls) at the 4:00 mark.
  • Heidelberg closed the quarter on a 7-3

2nd Quarter (BW, 45-18)

  • The Yellow Jackets opened the second stanza on a 11-6 run to take a 31-15 lead on a layup by junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) at the 5:57 mark
  • After another Student Princes basket, BW went on a 10-0 run to take a 41-17 lead on layup by freshman guard Kayla Jones (Grove City) at 2:35
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored Heidelberg 4-1 the remainder of the quarter

3rd Quarter (BW, 71-31)

  • BW extended the lead to 60-23 on a Wochele triple at the 4:51 mark
  • Heidelberg used a 6-2 run to cut the score down to 62-29 when junior Academic All-OAC guard/forward Morgan Altenburger spilt a pair from the charity strip at 2:46
  • The Yellow Jackets closed the quarter on a 9-2 run with the last points coming on a layup by freshman guard Haylee Baker (Shelby) with 25 seconds remaining

4th Quarter (BW, 89-49)

  • BW opened the final period on a 7-0 run to take a 78-31 lead on a layup by freshman forward Eily Badertscher (Wooster) at the 6:07 mark.
  • The Student Princes answered with a 9-0 run to cut the lead down to 80-40 on three straight three-pointers by Slaughter with the last coming at 5:19
  • Each team scored nine points apiece down the stretch

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, January 20 when they close out their two-game OAC home stand when they host Muskingum University at 1 p.m.
