Women's Basketball Stings Otterbein in Rare OAC Saturday Night Bout

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Otterbein University in an Ohio Athletic Conference game by a final score of 81-59 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (17-4, 13-1 OAC) had four players score in double figures led by Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) and junior All-OAC forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) as they each scored a game-high 15 points.  Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard/forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) and sophomore guard Leah Riley (Cincinnati/Sycamore) each added 12.

Otterbein (8-13, 6-8 OAC) was led by Maizie King who finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

1st Quarter (BW, 24-17)

  • Ressler got things started for the Yellow Jackets with five straight points by drilling a three and following it up with an unassisted layup
  • A three by senior guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) put the Brown and Gold up 11-3 forcing an Otterbein timeout
  • The Cardinals went on a 14-13 run to end the quarter

2nd Quarter (BW, 40-30)

  • Ressler was the first to reach double-figures just two minutes into the quarter
  • Otterbein stormed back to make it a three-point game at the 6:45 mark but BW answered with a 14-7 run to close the half
  • Senior forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) grabbed four of her nine boards on the night

3rd Quarter (BW, 58-39)

  • The Yellow Jacket defense held the Cardinals to just nine points in the quarter
  • BW extended its lead to 20 points at 56-36 when Vaillant hit two from the charity stripe at the 3:01 mark.
  • The Yellow Jackets and Otterbein would combine for five points the remainder of the stanza

4th Quarter (BW, 81-59)

  • BW pushed its lead to a game-high 28 points on two occasions with the last coming at 79-51 on a triple from freshman guard Haylee Baker (Shelby) at 3:04
  • The Cardinals would outscore the Yellow Jackets 8-2 the remainder of the game

BW is back in action on Wednesday, February 10 when it travels to Ada for an OAC game against Ohio Northern University in the ONU Sports Center at 7 p.m.
