No. 10 Women’s Basketball Falls to UW-Oshkosh in the NCAA Sweet 16

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 10 Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team faced University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the NCAA Division III National Tournament Sweet 16 inside Kachel Gymnasium on the Dave Vander Meulen Court. The strong UW-Oshkosh offense pushed the Titans past the Yellow Jackets by a 74-63 final score.

BW (23-5) was led by All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) as she tallied a team-high 23 points and nine rebounds and broke the BW single season record for points scored. Edwards shot 9-13 from the field and added two assists. The Yellow Jackets had two other notch double-digits, both off the bench, freshman guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) and freshman forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) each with 11 points. 

UW-Oshkosh (22-6) was led by senior guard Leah Porath as she posted a game-high 27 points and senior forward Nikki Arneson as she tallied 21 points.

1st Half

  • Scoring kicked off for the Yellow Jackets with a step-back jumper from Irwin
  • A three by Ressler put the Yellow Jackets up 11-7 at the xx:xx mark
  • Three-point basket by sophomore forward Kira Philpot (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) regained the lead for BW, 22-21
  • A battle in the paint by Edwards earned her the banked jumper to tie the game back up, 28-28
  • Back-back buckets by the Titans earned UW-Oshkosh the biggest lead of either team (33-28) after 20 minutes of play
  • The Yellow Jackets suffered seven first-half turnovers but outshot the Titans, going 12-24 while Oshkosh went 11-29 

2nd Half

  • At the under 5:00 media timeout in the third, the Yellow Jackets closed the gap to just three points (38-35) with another three-pointer from Philpot
  • A driving layup from Irwin with 1:18 left in the third quarter tied the game 45-45
  • A layup on the buzzer by Irwin sent BW into the fourth down one point (50-49 Titans)
  • Oshkosh notched a three at the 6:36 mark to put the Titans up 60-53
  • A three-point play by the Titans earned them the biggest lead of the game at 65-55 with 4:17 left in the contest
  • Three-pointer by Ressler at the 3:16 mark (61-67)
  • With BW's last bucket of the contest, fittingly, Edwards garnered the BW single season point record, notching 495 in her decorated 2021-22 season
  • The Titans finished the matchup on a 7-2 run to claim the 74-63 Sweet 16 win

The Yellow Jackets conclude the historic 2021-22 campaign with an overall record of 23-5. BW became the leader in the OAC with this 16th NCAA appearance along with leading the OAC in regular season and tournament titles with 10. The Yellow Jackets honored three All-OAC players this year: Edwards, junior Academic All-OAC guard Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky), and senior Academic All-OAC forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic). Head coach Cheri Harrer also earned OAC Coach of the Year. BW also honored Irwin and Philpot, who was named to the OAC All-Tournament Team.
