No. 17 Women’s Basketball Defeats Mount Union for OAC Victory

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 17 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team hosted University of Mount Union for a Wednesday night OAC matchup in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center. The Yellow Jackets earned the huge 70-57 win over the Purple Raiders.

The Yellow Jackets (8-2, 5-0 OAC) were led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) as she tallied a 17-point, 15-rebound double-double. BW landed three others in double-digits: junior Academic All-OAC guard Izzy Andrews (Ann Arbor, Mich./Rudolf Steiner School) as she totaled 11 points, sophomore forward Sylvie Sonneman (Jamestown/Greenview) as she totaled 10 points, and senior Academic All-OAC guard Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky) as she notched another 10 points.

BW earned the slight 28-26 lead over Mount Union (4-6, 1-4 OAC) heading into the locker room at halftime, shooting just 3-16 in the second quarter. After the break, the Yellow Jackets found their stride with Hensel hitting two big threes to start the half. BW outscored Mount Union 23-13 in the third to extend the lead to a 12-point margin heading into the last ten minutes of play. Outpacing the Purple Raiders in the fourth, BW clinched the big win by a 70-57 score. 

The Yellow Jackets forced 13 Mount Union turnovers in tonight's matchup while also grabbing the edge in rebounds (39-34). BW shot 23-57 (40.4%) as a team from the floor and went 6-19 from deep (4-6 in the third).

Mount Union was led by junior guard Emma Cannon as she notched a game-high 19 points and four rebounds.

BW's Sonneman also added a career-high four assists with her 10 points. Edwards also tallied four assists. Andrews dished out three assists while Hensel added two rebounds. Senior Academic All-OAC forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic) posted four points and seven rebounds. Junior Academic All-OAC guard Regan Schill (Sheffeild Village/Elyria Catholic) finished with seven points and an assist. 

The Yellow Jackets return to play this Saturday, January 8 as BW faces Muskingum University for the first game of an OAC women's and men's doubleheader. Tip-off of the women's game is set for 2:00 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
