No. 10 Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 13 John Carroll on Professor Appreciation Night

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 10 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team hosted the No. 13 nationally-ranked John Carroll University on the 2021-22 Professor Appreciation Night. The Yellow Jackets fell to the Blue Streaks in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center by a 67-54 final score. 

The Yellow Jackets (17-4, 14-2 OAC) were led by senior All-American and Academic All-OAC forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) as she tallied 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Sylvie Sonneman (Jamestown/Greenview) posted 11 points and shot 4-7 from the field.

The Blue Streaks (19-3, 14-2 OAC) were led by senior All-American and Academic All-OAC forward Nicole Heffington as she tallied 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC center Olivia Nagy posted 14 points and 13 rebounds.

1st Half

  • At the end of the first quarter, John Carroll led 18-8 as BW shot 3-17 (17.6%) from the field and tallied seven turnovers as a team.
  • Heffington notched seven points in the second quarter of JCU's 17 quarter.
  • BW shot 3-13 in the second quarter, two of them being big three-point shots from senior Academic All-OAC guard Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky).
  • The Blue Streaks went into the locker room at the break with a substantial 35-19 lead.

2nd Half

  • It was still a stand-still for BW offensively to start the third quarter and JCU held the Yellow Jackets to just three made free throws for the first six minutes of play in the half.
  • Starting at the 3:54 mark in the third, BW went on a 10-0 (six points from Sonneman) run to finish out the quarter and close the gap to just nine points (43-34 JCU).
  • BW inched their way back, bringing it as close as four points at the 5:19 mark in the fourth after a made shot from downtown by freshman guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Watkins Memorial).
  • The Yellow Jackets kept the momentum on their side for most of the fourth as Edwards notched an old-fashioned three-point play with 3:36 left to play (51-46, JCU).
  • Knocked down three-pointer by junior Academic All-OAC guard Regan Schill (Sheffeild Village/Elyria Catholic) at the 2:27 mark to keep the JCU advantage at just seven points (56-49).
  • Freshman forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) knocked down a shot from distance with 1:23 left in the contest, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Streaks found a response with every BW score in the final minutes and went on to win by a 67-54 final score.

The Yellow Jackets return to play this Saturday, February 19 for the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader. The teams will host Capital University for Seniors' day. The women's game will start at 2:00 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
