Six Baldwin Wallace University Track Members Qualify for This Week’s Division III National Meet

NOTE:   Baldwin Wallace University vacated the results of the 4x100-meter relay due to an NCAA Infraction.

BEREA, OHIO --  Six Baldwin Wallace University competitors, four individuals and one relay team, have qualified for the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship Meet at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College in Claremont, California from May 24-26. Highlighting the Yellow Jacket qualifiers are junior two-time Division III All-American Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit). The others are senior Mike Smith (Wintersville/ Indian Creek), junior Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) and sophomores  Shawn Cordes (Litchfield/ Medina Buckeye)Kevin Johnson (Garfield Hts./ Cleveland St. Ignatius) and Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview). To qualify for NCAA Division III meet, men's running events must finish top 16 nationally and men's field events must finish top 20 nationally.


Supan returns for his third NCAA Division III outdoor meet and Marinucci (2012 indoor), for his second meet. Each member of the men's 4 x 100 meter relay team are making their first trip.


Supan, who placed eighth in the discus as a freshman (163'5") and fourth as a sophomore (168'3") to earn his two All-America accolades (the top eight competitors in each event and relay earn NCAA Division III All-America honors), is qualified  sixth in the shot put (56'3.75"), 12th in the discus (172'8") and 14th in the hammer (187'3"). A year ago, Supan also placed 17th in the shot put.


Smith, who is a senior academically but has another season of athletic eligibility remaining, will joined on the 4 x 100-meter relay team by CordesJohnson and Holt.  The quartet ranks 14th with a season-best time of 41.57 seconds. Johnson and Holt also were key members of last fall's 8-2 Yellow Jacket football team and the entire group returns in 2013.


Marinucci, who narrowly missed All-America honors at the national indoor meet by placing ninth in the shot put (54'2"), currently ranks 10th in the shot put (55'3.75") and 19th in the discus (166'7").
