Baldwin Wallace's Supan is 8th in Discus; 4x100 Relay Qualifies

CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA --  Baldwin Wallace University junior Mitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit) placed eighth in the discus to earn his third Division III All-America award and the Yellow Jacket 4x 100-meter relay team qualified for Saturday's final as all eighth BW competitors competed on the first day of the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Track & Field Championships at Claremont (Calif.) Mudd-Scripps College. This is the first of three days of competition.

Supan placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 171-feet and three inches. He has earned All-America acclaim twice in the hammer (eighth as a freshman and fourth last year) and will compete tomorrow in the hammer and in the shot put on Saturday. In addition to Supan, junior Zach Marinucci (Brunswick) placed 12th with a throw of 160'10". The top eight competitors in each event earn NCAA Div. III All-American accolades.

In the 4x100-meter relay, the quartet of sophomore Shawn Cordes (Medina/ Buckeye), senior Mike Smith (Wintersville/ Indian Creek) and sophomores Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview) andKevin Johnson (Garfield Heights/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) ran a season-best 41.30 seconds to place sixth in their heat and qualify for Saturday's final.

Tomorrow, Supan competes in the hammer. On Saturday, Supan and Marinucci compete in the shot put and the 4x100 relay runs in its final.
