Baldwin Wallace’s Supan Places 15th in Hammer at NCAA Div. III National Meet

CLAREMONT, CALIFORNIA --  Baldwin Wallace University juniorMitch Supan (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit) placed 15th in the hammer throw today (Friday, May 25) on the second day of the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Track & Field Championships at Claremont (Calif.) Mudd-Scripps College. The final day of competition is tomorrow, is on Saturday (May 26).

Supan threw the hammer 180-feet and two inches to place 15th of 20 competitors. His best throw was well off of his best throw of the season of 187'3".  On Thursday, the first day of the championships,Supan earned his third NCAA Division III All-America award when he placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 171-feet and three inches. He has earned All-America acclaim twice in the hammer (eighth as a freshman and fourth last year). The top eight competitors in each event earn NCAA Div. III All-American accolades.  He will compete tomorrow in the shot put along with junior teammate Zach Marinucci (Brunswick).

In addition to Supan and Marinucci competing in the men's shot put on Saturday, 4 x 100-meter relay team of sophomore Shawn Cordes (Medina/ Buckeye), senior Mike Smith (Wintersville/ Indian Creek) and sophomores Josiah Holt (Elyria/ Grafton Midview) and Kevin Johnson (Garfield Heights/ Cleveland St. Ignatius) will run in the finals.

On Thursday, all eight Yellow Jackets competed: Supan was eighth in the discus and Marinucci placed 12th with a throw of 160'10"; the 4 x 100 relay squad ran a season-best 41.30 seconds to place sixth in its heat and qualify for Saturday's final.
