Men's Lacrosse Shuts Out Wilmington in Home Contest

BEREA, Ohio - The Baldwin Wallace University men's lacrosse team posted its first shutout in program history as the team rolled past Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest on the Tressel Field inside Finnie Stadium. The 25-0 win over the Quakers extended the Yellow Jackets' winning streak to ten games and is the team's 30th consecutive win in regular season OAC play.

BW (10-2, 4-0 OAC) was led by junior attack/midfielder Keaton Trout (Pickerington/North) as he recorded a career-high nine points on two goals and a career-high seven assists. Freshman Jake Koonmen (Fairport, N.Y.) added a career-high six points on three goals and three assists, five of which came during the second half. Sixteen Yellow Jackets' recorded a point or more, including four players that recorded their first goals of the season.

All four goalkeepers on the BW roster combined to guide the team's first shutout in program history, facing only two shots on goal thanks to a stellar overall team performance. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Quakers 65-9, including a 43-2 advantage in shots on goal, and won 23-of-28 faceoffs.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Trout scored or assisted on four goals inside the opening five minutes as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead.
  • Freshman midfielder Nate Hoover's (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) first career goal in OAC play put the Yellow Jackets ahead 5-0 at the midway point of the quarter.
  • Back-to-back goals by senior attack/midfielder Kyler Byerly (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and Trout's second goal and fifth point of the period capped an eight-goal quarter for the Yellow Jackets. 

SECOND QUARTER

  • The Yellow Jackets struck four times in under four minutes to extend the lead to 12-0 at the midway point of the second.
  • Junior midfielder Tyler Zeplowitz's (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) first career goal put BW ahead 13-0 at the 3:11 mark.
  • The lead grew to 15-0 at the half, with sophomore attack Ryan Yanssens (Lexington, S.C./River Bluff) and junior midfielder Niccolas Spotti (Mars, Pa.) also tallying their first goals of the season in the quarter.
  • BW outshot Wilmington 38-3 in the first half, including a 24-0 edge in shots on goal, and won 15-of-16 faceoffs. 

THIRD QUARTER

  • Koonmen scored or assisted on three of BW's first four goals of the half, as the Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 19-0 by the midway point of the third quarter.
  • Freshman attack/midfielder Keyan Moser (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) scored his first career goal to cap a six-goal third quarter for BW. 

FOURTH QUARTER

  • BW registered three goals in 56 seconds to start the fourth quarter.
  • Junior attack/midfielder Rhys Leach (Canton/GlenOak) tallied BW's 25th and final goal with just over six minutes to play.
  • Junior goalkeeper Cian Howery (Golden, Co./Wheat Ridge) denied a last-second shot to preserve the first shutout in program history and extend the Yellow Jackets' record-breaking OAC regular season winning streak to 30 games. 

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Wednesday, April 12, as they hit the road for an OAC contest against Heidelberg University. Opening faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. inside Hoernemann Stadium.
