Brown Leads Baldwin Wallace Men to 86-73 Victory versus Muskingum in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) scored a game-high 25 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum University, 86-73, today (Saturday, February 13, 2010) at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win ended a brief, two-game Yellow Jacket losing streak and is BW's ninth victory in the last 14 contests.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 13-10 overall and 8-8 in the OAC. Brown connected on six three-pointers and was named BW's Al Sirat Grotto Player of the Game. Also for the Jackets, sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) totaled 15 points and a career-high eight assists and freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) had 14 points and eight rebounds. The Fighting Muskies, 7-16 overall and 2-14 in the OAC, were led by Nick Hershberger with 22 points.

In the first half, BW scored 13 straight and opened up a 15-3 lead when junior forward Kevin Gall (Brookpark/ Midpark) connected on a short jumper at the 13:27 mark. Muskingum scored two on a Kyle Clinedist layup on its next possession, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) and led by 13, at 18-5.

The Muskies rallied with an 11-2 run and pulled within four at 20-16 when Carson Thomas nailed a triple at 9:27. MU would eventually trim its deficit to three on two occasions, the second coming at 32-29 on a pair of Seth Thomas free throws at 3:02. However, BW ended the half on an 11-5 run and led 43-34 when Brown hit one of two free throws with three seconds left before intermission.

In the second half, BW quickly built its lead to 20 at 58-38 on a Cabbil fast-break layup at 16:10 that followed 11 straight points off the hot shooting hands of Brown and capped a 15-4 run. Muskie chipped away and got within eight, at 70-62, when Hershberger canned a three at 6:37. Undaunted, BW scored 10 straight and led 80-62 when freshman forward Sean Rothermel (Delaware/ Hayes) hit a jumper with 4:26 left to play. The Muskies briefly got back within 11, but the Jackets held strong down the stretch and secured the 86-73 victory.
