Men's Basketball Team Loses to Case Western Reserve, 83-81, in its Season Opener in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team lost to visiting Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 83-81, tonight (Monday, November 16, 2009) in the season-opener for each team in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.

With their loss, the Yellow Jackets are 0-1 overall and next play on Friday at traditional rival Hiram College at 7:30 p.m. With their win, the Spartans are  1-0 overall and next play on Friday at 8:00 p.m. against Washington & Lee (Va.) University in the first round of the CWRU Tournament.

In the first, half, the Spartans built an early seven-point advantage at 20-13 at the 13:10 mark when junior forward Alex Hildebrandt made a layup but was unable to complete the three-point play when he missed a foul shot. CWRU built its lead to nine points at 24-15 with 11:06  left when senior guard Bryan Erce made a layup.

BW then went on a 16-6 run to take its first lead at 31-30 at the 5:12 mark when freshman Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) made a layup. BW's lead grew to four points at 34-30 with 3:57 left when senior forward and co-captain Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) made one of two foul shots.

CWRU then scored the next four points to tie it at 34-34 and then continued its 15-6 run to take a 45-40 lead at halftime when senior guard Reid Anderson nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to complete a 19-point first half scoring output.

In the second half, BW opened on a 10-5 run to tie it at 50-50 with 15:42 left when junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) made a steal and scored on a layup. CWRU countered with a 12-5 run of its own to lead 62-55 with 10:31 left when junior center Eric Duerr rebounded a missed shot and made his own.

After BW cut the CWRU lead back to one point at 63-62, the Spartans went on a 12-2 run to build their largest lead of the game at 11 points at 75-64 when sophomore forward Tom Summers made two foul shots.

BW then went on a 15-5 run to close to within one point at 80-79 with 50.17 seconds left when All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) made three foul shots.

The Spartans then gained a three-point lead at 82-79 when Erce made a pair of free throws with 23.10 seconds left . BW sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) then made two foul shots with 17.90 seconds left to make it 82-81. After a CWRU timeout and then turnover, BW had a chance to take the lead, but a jumper by Brown was off target and the Yellow Jackets had to foul. CWRU freshman forward Evan Tsudis then closed out the scoring with one foul shot to make the score 83-81 with 5.73 seconds left, and BW had one final chance to tie or win, but a mishandled pass and jump ball ended the game.

The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore point guard Cabbil with a career-high 17 points and a career-high seven assists. He was joined in double figures by Brown, senior center Ben Dobberstein (Berea) and freshman guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) each with 11 points. The Spartans were led by Anderson with a game-high 25 points. He was joined in double figures by Summers with 17 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, freshman guard Robert Scott with 12 points and Duerr  had 10 markers.
