Baldwin Wallace Men Defeat Mt. Union, 82-61, in Berea for Fourth Straight Victory

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) scored a game-high 19 points as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference arch-rival Mount Union College, 82-61, tonight (Wednesday, January 6, 2010) in Berea. The victory was a season-high fourth straight for the Yellow Jackets (8-5 overall, 3-3 in the OAC).

In addition to Meeder for BW, three others scored in double-figures including senior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) and sophomore guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) with 14 apiece. The Purple Raiders (5-8 overall, 3-3 OAC) were led by Matt Wier with 16 points and have lost five straight games.

The Yellow Jackets shot 54.9 percent from the field and hit their first 12 free throws en route to shooting 87.9% (20-for-23) from the charity stripe.

BW led the entire first half with the exception of the first 38 seconds. The Jackets had four leads of six points and got off to a 10-4 advantage when Meeder scored on a layup at the 14:18 mark. Mount Union got as close as one on two separate occasions, the last coming with 1:42 remaining when Jimmy Wood made a pair of free throws to make the score 24-23. BW scored the final five points of the half and moved ahead 29-23 on a layup from freshman guard Brandon Schmidt (Wellington) at 00:56.

In the second half, Mount Union opened on a 6-0 run ending in two Sam King free throws that tied the score at 29 at the 18:26 mark. BW responded with an 11-4 run and led by seven, at 40-33, when freshman forward Ed Householder (North Jackson/ Tallmadge) canned a triple with 14:42 left to play. Following a Raider basket at 13:06, the Yellow Jackets blew the game open with a 25-8 run that made the score 65-43 with 6:21 remaining. The run was highlighted by 10 points from Brown. BW's largest lead of 23 came when a Meeder layup made the score 82-59 with 00:44 left on the clock.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 9 when they travel to New Concord, Ohio to play OAC foe Muskingum University in the Muskingum HPER Center at 3:00 p.m. The next men's home game is on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when BW hosts Ohio Northern University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
