BW Men Defeat Indiana East, 96-87 in Overtime, in the First Round of the Thomas More (Ky.) Tourney

BEREA, OHIO --  Freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated NAIA foe Indiana University-East, 96-87 in overtime, tonight (Sunday, December 27, 2009) in the first round of the Thomas More College Coach Connor Classic in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  BW, now 5-5 overall, plays the host school tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. in the championship game.


In addition to Ameen, junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Fairview) had 18 points, senior forward and captain Paul Glass (Medina/ Senior) had a career-high-tying 17 points, sophomore point guard Promis Cabbil (Elyria/ Senior) also had 17 and sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) had 13 off the bench.  The keys to the BW win was outrebounding the much taller Red Wolves, 51-33, and outscoring them from the free throw line, 33-19.  Junior guard Tyler Rigsby led IUE with 22 markers as the Red Wolves fall to 7-5 overall and play Mount Union College tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-point lead at 14-4 at the 15:40 mark when Meeder made a three-pointer.  The Red Wolves then went on its own 14-4 run to tie the game at 18-18 at the 10:39 mark when senior forward Noah Douglas mae a layup. IUE contined its run by outscoring BW 5-2 to take a 23-20 lead at the 9:35 mark when Rigsby scored a layup off a fast-break.

BW then regained the lead at 25-23 at the 8:50 mark when Voiers canned a three-pointer.  BW then increased its lead to six points on two separate occassions with the last being 37-31 at the 5:55 mark when Glass made a layup.  Undaunted the Red Wolves outscored BW 6-0 to tie the game at 37-37 and continued its run to build a five-point lead at 50-45 with 49 seconds left before the intermission when junior point guard Brent Burris made two foul shots.  IUE also led at halftime by two points at 50-48.

In the second half, BW tied the game at 50-50 with 19:26 left when Meeder scored on a layup.  IUE then regained the lead and built it to eight points on two separate occassions with the last at 66-58 with 12:02 left when sophomore guard David Sanders made a three-pointer.

Despite trailing most of the rest of the second half, BW outscored the Red Wolves 16-8 to finally tie the score at 74-74 with 2:14 left in the game when Meeder made a layup.  Meeder then gave BW its first lead since early in the first half when he canned two foul shots with 1:36 left. Then Cabbil made two of his own to give the Yellow Jackets a four-point advantage at 78-74 with 26 seconds left.

A Red Wolve foul shot by Sanders with 20 sconds left made the score 78-75 and a Rigsby foul shot with 16 seconds left made the score 78-76. On the inbounds play, IUE fouled Ameen with 16 seconds left and he made one of two shots for a 79-76 BW lead.  Sanders then brought the Red Wolves within one point at 79-78 with 13 seconds left.

Then, following timeouts by each team, IUE fouled Meeder, who made one of two shots with four seconds left for an 80-78 lead.  The Red Wolves then got the rebound down the floor quickly and laid the ball in the basket with 0.6 seconds left to tie the score at 80-80.  A fullcourt baseball-style pass and poential game-winning shot by senior All-OAC forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) went in-and-out and led to overtime.

In the overtime, a Brown layup and a dunk by IUE's Joacobe Edmondson led to an 82-82 tie.  A Meeder foul shot with 3:40 left gave BW back the lead at 83-82. Then a Glass jumper at 2:47 gave BW an 85-82 lead.  A Burris foul shot for IUE at 2:30 made the score 85-83.  Then Ameen grabbed a missed Glass shot and laid it in for an 87-83 lead at the 1:12 mark. A pair of foul shots by Cabbil pushed the lead to 89-83 with 56 seconds left.  Meeder foul shot at 38 seconds then "iced" the game as BW earned the first round win.

Following its game versus Thomas More, BW is idle until Sunday, January 3, 2010 when it travels to Alma, Michigan to play Alma College at 2:00 p.m.  Media and fans can listen LIVE to all Yellow Jacket men's and women's basketball games on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM.
