BEREA, OHIO -- Junior guard Zane Meeder (Erie, Pa./ Faiview) scored a career-high 20 points and had seven rebounds as the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 80-72, today (Saturday, December 5, 2009) in the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta.
In addition to Meeder for BW, senior forward Kyle Brown (Strongsville) had 14 points, freshman forward Chris Ameen (Broadview Heights/ Walsh Jesuit) had 13 points, and junior forward Kevin Gall (Brook Park/ Midpark) totaled 12 points and six rebounds. Kevin Knab led Marietta with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the OAC and next plays on Saturday, December 12 when it hosts Capital University in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m. Marietta's next game is also on Saturday, Dec. 12 when they travel to Tiffin to play Heidelberg University at 3:00 p.m.
In the first half, Marietta jumped out to a 13-point advantage when Kevin Knab made a layup to give the Pioneers a 28-15 lead at the 9:39 mark. The Yellow Jackets then went on a 20-6 run to pull within one, at 36-35, when sophomore guard Scott Voiers (Westlake/ Lutheran West) connected on a three pointer with 3:04 left in the period. Marietta was able to outscore BW four to three over the final three minutes to go into half with a 40-38 lead.
In the second half, Meeder made a layup at 18:29 to put BW ahead 42-40. BW�s lead grew to as many as 10 points on two separate occassions. The first came at the 8:45 mark when Voiers made two free throws to make the score 62-52 and the second came at the 7:10 mark when Brown connected on a jumper to increase the lead to 64-54. Marietta cut the lead to four at 74-70 but Brown made a three-pointer with 1:24 left to play to push the BW lead back to seven en route to the 80-72 win.
